When folk talk about David, there are recurring themes of his kindness; his gentlemanliness; and that wicked sense of humour- a few of the reasons it was a privilege to have such a wonderful cousin. David has been a joyful constant for so long now that life will be forever that little bit bright and less fun. Fond memories are many , but include David's spot on teenage fashion of long hair and flares; the Bay City Rollers served him well. Then there was kindly driving me and my chum to and from boarding school to Granny Downie in Rosehearty singing, "Carol, I am but a fool!" at the top of our voices (having convinced us we were quite the trendies; found out later it was 1958 Neil Sedaka); lifting our spirits at Jean Downie's funeral with his rendition of Nana and the suppy milk in her tea; and more recently watching him with Mum playing cards, teasing Finn and drinking Kanenkop - these and so many others will remain special. As will the lift he gave me to Heathrow last October despite the awful traffic; when we laughed and he spoke (as always) so fondly of Val (cycling holiday was ahead), Finn (always bristled with pride) and his extended family in the Broch and Liphook. Fond farewell to one of the very finest; together with deepest condolences, strength and love to all the Bichans and Martins; from all of us in Cape Town. Xxxxxx
